Starting the New Year with a New Career

Caitlyn Marchand
The holiday season is both fun and hectic, so it’s no surprise that you may not have devoted a ton of energy towards your career pursuits. However, it might serve as a bit of motivation to you to know that the start of the new year is a great time to begin a new career! Whether you’re a December graduate who’s hitting the market for the first time, or someone who is simply looking for a change, here’s what you need to know about applying to jobs at the start of the year.

New year = new budget

Companies receive their yearly budget in January and are probably looking to spend it on some fresh talent. You could be the one filling those newly-available positions if you are able to fit in some time for applications now that the gift giving is over and the new year is underway.

There’s less competition for new graduates

Most people fall for the common misconception that the late-spring and summer months are perfect for applying due to the large number of May graduates hitting the market. Think about it though- thousands of college graduates entering the workforce at the same time means more competition for a limited number of positions! In contrast, December graduates are throwing their hats in the arena at a time where there’s less immediate competition, so be sure to take advantage of it.

You might have to wait around a bit, though

It’s both a blessing and a curse that the winter months have less competition when it comes to the job search. You may not get lost in the shuffle, but hiring managers are more likely to take their time with your resume, meaning you might find yourself patiently waiting for an offer. Employers will be busy planning how to spend the budget, outlining the year’s plans, and reorganizing themselves after the holidays, so don’t be surprised if it takes you a month rather than a week to secure a position. With this in mind, don’t be afraid to reach out to your interviewer after a reasonable amount of time if you’re worried that you’ve been forgotten!
