Career Resolutions for the New Year

Caitlyn Marchand
Let’s be real- most people don’t actually stick to their New Year’s resolutions for more than a few weeks. Despite this, setting career-related goals for the new year is a crucial step towards success and will allow you to hit the ground running in 2019. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Get more organized

You may have a comfortable routine that you feel works, but there’s always room for improvement. Whether it’s something as simple as adding some structure to your inbox, or a major haul like a complete redesign of your desk space, getting organized provides you with a fresh start as you head into 2019.

Get closer to your boss

You’ll never get the promotion you feel you deserve if you simply melt into the background of your office space. Make it a point to connect with your boss on a deeper level this year- whether it be a few passing conversations each week or inviting them out to lunch one day, any effort you make will not go unnoticed.

Reevaluate your long-term goals

Where do you see yourself in five years, and will you be able to get there with your current job? Be sure to consider what you want to achieve in the long run, and begin planning some steps now that will take you there. A company that does not promote from within may not provide you with the opportunities you are looking for, so it could be time to search elsewhere!

Update your resume

Once you’re out of college and in a stable position, it can be easy to forget about that super important piece of paper. It’s a good practice to revisit your resume at least once a year to add any new skills or promotions you’ve received and update details on current and past positions.

If you don’t have a job, make it your plan to find one

Finally, if none of this applies to you because you haven’t found the perfect position, make it your goal to find a career you enjoy! Be sure to look for companies that share similar values to you and offer plenty of opportunities to rise within them.
